The resultant product, 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25-OH-D), is the major circulating and storage form of vitamin D and a reliable indicator to assess vitamin D status. 25-OH-D is hydroxylated in the kidney by 1α-hydroxylase to produce the physiologically active 1,25(OH) 2 D. This step is tightly regulated by PTH, calcium, phosphorus, and 1,25(OH) 2 D.
